Settle into the luxe life in the Gold Coast. The name of this neighborhood fits better than most, considering the area is one of the country's most prosperous neighborhoods, built from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire. In 1882, Potter Palmer came to Chicago and filled in a swampy area we know to now be Lake Shore Drive, and built his massive Palmer Mansion, which used to be the largest private residence in the entire city. Palmer's affluence was the start of the Gold Coast becoming Chicago's wealthiest neighborhood.

Window shopping in the winter is ideal here, too, when the streets are alight with twinkling lights that reflect off the snow.
