With infection rates on the rise, the city of Chicago has had to make the unfortunate, unplanned pivot to scale back pool openings. While the number of pools is smaller than hoped for, there are still a few options available. Take a look at our compiled list to help you get through the Summer heat and navigate the new rules and expectations when cooling off. Note, swimming in Lake Michigan is a viable option under designated lakefront allowances.
The following pools are at this present time, open:
- In Deerfield, Mitchell Pool will be open for the season, however, a date has yet to be communicated.
- In Lake Bluff, the park district’s swimming pool is open for business with stipulations.
- In Orland Park, the Centennial Park Aquatic Center is open.
Please keep in mind that there will be extra precautions when enjoying these pools. In order to ensure your safety this Summer, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), have taken special considerations when making new rules for swimming this year:
- Two-hour swimming sessions.
- All chairs have been removed. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own or to rent sanitized deck chairs available on site.
- Season pass holders are allowed entry until capacity is reached that will allow social distancing to be observed.
- Daily passes will still be sold.
- After each swim time slot, the pool will be cleared out of patrons and disinfected.
- Patrons are allowed to attend as many pool sessions as they like.
- Wear a mask at all times.
- Stay at least six feet away from all other people.
The following pools will remain closed until further review:
- In the city of Chicago, public pools are staying closed until further notice.
- In Tinley Park, officials are waiting for IDPH guidance for Phase 4.
- In Highland Park, pools will remain closed.
- In Elgin, all outdoor pools are closed for the season, the option of indoor pools are still being determined.
- In Naperville, the public beach will remain closed.
- Fox Valley pools will stay closed for the season.
While there was hope that more pools would be readily available in the staggering hot months the city has come up with a strategy for a safer alternative for cooling down this Summer. Spray stations have been posted throughout select areas of Chicago to help combat the heat. Most of the spray stations will be available for use from 9am-9pm daily. Social distancing must be practiced, and masks are required. A different yet welcomed option for an especially hot Summer!
