Chicago unites for more celebrating less than a week after river dyeing and other St. Paddy’s Day shenanigans—this time wearing maroon and gold. With 2 wins so far in the NCAA Tournament, Loyola University rambles on. Tonight the men’s team plays Nevada—who’s fresh from upsetting the #2 seed, Cincinnati Bearcats. It’s gonna get scrappy.
Whether you’re an LU alumnus, a hoops fanatic, or just looking for an excuse to make merry and visit Ramblers’ turf, we’ve picked a few things for you to do near both the Rogers Park and Water Tower campuses.
Rogers Park, Lake Shore Campus
Planning on watching which ‘pack outruns the other? Pull up a stool at Mullen’s Sports Bar and Grill (7301 N Western Ave). Just “off campus” enough that you won’t cramp the current students’ scene, this neighborhood comfort serves up drink specials, Irish fare (for those who aren’t yet abstaining from corned beef), and a lively atmosphere.

Not up for beers and basketball? Check out Ellipsis Coffeehouse (1259 W Devon Ave), a popular spot for Ramblers and visitors alike. Quality roasted beans and a yummy selection of bites are the name of this game.

Gold Coast, Water Tower Campus
It’s like Velvet Taco (1110 N State St) foresaw Chicago reaching the Sweet 16 bracket. Show support for Ramblers’ colors with the Annatto shredded pork taco. Avocado crema, house shred, grilled pineapple, pickled onion, queso fresco, and cilantro all live in a hibiscus corn tortilla. Order two for an extra dose of luck.

All this “Madness” making you nostalgic? Water Tower’s own Chicago Sports Museum (835 N Michigan Ave, 7th fl) should remedy that. Eat at the attached Harry Caray’s 7th Inning Stretch Tavern to earn free admission. Otherwise, an easy $6 will grant you passage to our city’s sporting history.
