Modern Art Becomes Ads

What is Override: A Billboard Project? Well, it’s not your typical art installation. From now through September 25, you can skip museum fees and turn your mind-numbing commutes into stimulating journeys.

EXPO CHICAGO (International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art) and the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) unveil a large-scale shakeup as part of EXPO CHICAGO 2016. 28 billboards across Chicago’s City Digital Network (CDN) now feature works from the fifth annual exhibit (Navy Pier, September 22-25). The 15 selected artists hail from Chicago studios, national galleries and international art hubs.

So what’s the draw of witnessing these contemporary pieces as elevated advertisements? Other than a break from routine signage, the program explains: “[to] push the boundaries of how visual culture is disseminated”.
