What started as a way for restaurants to stay open and properly distanced during COVID regulations has now expanded into its’ own sort of scene! Whether you call them igloos, greenhouses, inflatables, or bubbles…Chicagoans aren’t afraid of a little cold. Due to their inherent limited capacity, you may need to make reservations at some places or be prepared to spend a minimum amount to get a seat. But it’s a great way to enjoy some rooftop or alfresco experiences in the middle of a Chicago winter; just don’t be afraid to BYOB (bring your own blanket!) Check out a more detailed description of great Igloo spots here below in our article.
This is the O.G., the originator and most well-known igloo spot in Chicago. Their igloos are like little snow globes that fit up to 6 people and have their own heaters. Be ready, however: to get in on the action, you have to be ready to order from their ‘Celebrate’ menu. In other words, you have to buy at least one bottle. Plus even with a bottle purchase, you only get to use the igloo for two hours. However, if you’re a baller and want to enjoy the view…I/O Godfrey might be one of the best bets in town.
If I/O Godfrey is the downtown high-roller igloo spot, the Kennedy Rooftop is more of the hipster favorite. In the middle of Wicker Park/Bucktown, the Kennedy is the creation of the Hyatt Place Wicker Park. If you want to get in an igloo, you have to make reservations; this of course can be done either on the phone or online.
Maybe the most historic building on the list, LondonHouse is a relatively new concept in one of Chicago’s older structures. Listed as the #2 rooftop in the nation (at least according to the LH website) it of course also features igloos. However: for LH it’s only a winter holiday thing! They call it something like Rudolph’s Rooftop, meaning it only lasts until early January.
